Màiri talks about the excavation

I was invited to join this excavation by Anu and immediately leapt at the chance to experience archaeology in Estonia – not quite realising what I was agreeing to.  I’ve certainly enjoyed my time here, although I wasn’t quite ready for everything.  The discovery that mosquitos and horseflies will go through three layers of bug spray is certainly something that won’t leave me in a hurry.  On the same note, finding out after a week that I’m actually allergic to the things will be a cherished memory for years to come.  Other surprises include the far more relaxed attitude to excavation that Liz discussed the other day (I think it’ll take me a while to get used to wearing shoes again whilst on site) and the wild abandon with which people get naked here.

Outside of excavating, I think the most fun has been finding out about the different culture and (very) different language.  Estonian is a ridiculous language to try and learn by the way, even the most basic words.  I feel I should take this opportunity to apologise to everyone who had to listen to me butchering the language (you poor people).  My favourite discovery has definitely been the swings – in the UK swings are for one or two people at a time, sitting down and doing relatively little except swinging.  The great big swings you stand and swing together on are so much better!  Especially when accompanied with songs.

Basically, I’d just really like to come back again.  That’s what I’m getting at here.  Although if someone could get rid of the mosquitos first that’d be pretty awesome.
